A senator from the Dutch Freedom Party was appointed to explore a possible governing coalition after the far-right party’s electoral victory, reports Breaking News.

Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s party has said it will support a centre-right administration in parliament but will not join the next government.

The Freedom Party, or PVV, led by veteran anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders, won 37 seats in the 150-seat lower house, marking the Netherlands’ shock shift to the right.

Rutte’s People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy won 24 seats, 10 fewer than in the previous election, according to Wednesday’s nearly complete vote count, reports Breaking News.

After a meeting of party leaders in parliament, PVV senator Gom van Strien was appointed to explore a possible coalition.

Newly elected lawmakers will debate the results on December 6.

The new leader of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), Dylan Yesilgoz-Zegerias, wrote on Twitter that after losing 10 seats in the election, the long-time ruling party would “make possible and constructively support a centre-right Cabinet with good policies” but will not join the government, reports Breaking News.
