Tributes paid to boys (15 and 17) who both sadly died in a bus and e-scooter crash in Waterford

Early this morning in Waterford, a bus and an e-scooter collided, resulting in the death of a second kid, reports RTE.

On the R680 Cork Road, the event happened at about 2:10 in the morning.

At the scene, the 15-yr-old boy who was riding the e-scooter was declared deceased, reports RTE.

Serious injuries were sustained by a second youngster, 17, who was also riding the e-scooter and was sent to Waterford University Hospital. It was there on Thursday afternoon that he too sadly passed away.

The bus’s driver was unharmed. At the moment of the crash, the bus was empty of people.

For a technical assessment of the situation, Cork Road between South East Technological University and the Ring Road is blocked, and detours are in place, reports RTE.

The Garda are calling on witnesses, especially any drivers who may have dash-cam footage and were on the Cork Road in Waterford city between 1.45 and 2.15 in the morning, to get in touch with any garda station, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 or Waterford Garda Station at 051 305300.

The number of fatalities on Irish roads this year now stands at 92, reports RTE.

The JJ Kavanagh & Sons bus business sent their sympathies to the families in a statement, stating that they are collaborating closely with the gardaí and other emergency services to provide the families with the best possible care during this extremely trying time.

Mayor of Waterford queries the e-scooter law

Everyone is “shocked” by the occurrence, according to Councillor Joe Kelly, Mayor of the Waterford Metropolitan Area, reports RTE.
