Since 1947, with the creation of the independent Air Force, the U.S Military has had five branches. Now President Trump has ordered the creation of a sixth branch – ‘The Space Force’.
Since he began campaigning for the Presidency, Trump has suggested re-invigorating U.S space exploration and even talked about the colonization of space and other planets at his inauguration. In March he suggested a new military branch to be solely focused on space and now this is to become a reality.
“Our destiny beyond the Earth is not only a matter of national identity but a matter of national security,” Trump said.
The new military branch will have a relationship to the Air Force similar to that which the current Marine Corps has to the Navy.
Some experts however, have suggested that the new space force would be better related to the Navy, as it may involve long distance missions over extended periods of time and other similarities historically more within the realm of naval operations.
