The average duration of stay for overnight visitors from abroad was 8.6 nights, slightly lower than the 8.7-night average recorded in August 2024, and down from 9.9 nights in August 2023.
Foreign visitors spent a total of 6.7 million nights in Ireland, showing no difference from August 2024, but reflecting a nine per cent drop when compared with August 2023, reports Breaking News.
The highest proportion of visitors came from Great Britain, accounting for 36 per cent, followed by 23 per cent arriving from the United States.
The most common reason cited for travelling to Ireland was tourism, making up 48 per cent of all visits, reports Breaking News.
The second most frequent reason was visiting family or friends, with 239,900 individuals (31 per cent) travelling for this purpose.
An additional 71,000 visitors, or 9.2 per cent, entered the country for business or work-related purposes.
Compared to August 2024, the number of holiday travellers fell by 0.8 per cent, while those visiting family and friends declined by 2.8 per cent, and business or work-related travel dropped by six per cent, reports Breaking News.
