Guest sadly died at Clare wedding reception after steak lodged in his throat, Coroner hears

An inquest has heard that a 67-year-old wedding guest passed away during the main course of the wedding dinner at a wedding reception held at a hotel in west Clare last Christmas after a piece of steak became stuck in his throat, reports The Mirror.

Brendan Glynn passed away on Friday, December 22nd, at the Armada Hotel at Spanish Point due to laryngeal impaction, according to the report made by Clare Coroner Isobel O’Dea at the Co Clare Coroner’s Court in Ennis today.

Ms. O’Dea offered her condolences to the “many” persons who attended the inquest and to those who were there when Mr. Glynn unexpectedly passed away at the wedding, which she said “should have been a joyous occasion,” reports The Mirror.

Ms. O’Dea also honoured the off-duty medical professionals who attended the wedding and attempted, but were unable, to save Mr. Glynn’s life.

Mr. Glynn, a single electrician from the adjacent coastal village of Lahinch, was present at the wedding earlier that day at Liscannor Church for Justin Nestor and Megan O’Donnell.

During the dinner, John Murphy sat next to Mr. Glynn. He later testified at the inquiry, saying, “I would have been talking away to Brendan seconds before this happened and he seemed fine.” According to Mr. Murphy, Brendan had been at odds with himself and didn’t appear to be experiencing any problems at all, reports The Mirror.
