Emergency services have urged Drogheda residents to keep an eye on their elderly and disabled neighbours as a severe shortage of water has struck the County Louth town.

It’s believed some elderly and disabled people may not have enough water to even make a cup of tea.

Drogheda and its surrounding suburbs are without water for the entire weekend after a burst water main was reported in the town on Friday afternoon.

According to IrishWater.ie, the works to fix the mains supply will not be completed until Sunday 2pm at the earliest but many fear this could go on longer.

The company say the shortage comes after a leak occurred on the main that brings water to the Staleen Water Treatment Plant.

The company say water shortages will effect the following areas which include Drogheda Town, Rosehall, Clogherhead, Termonfeckin, Ashbourne, Ratoath, Curragha, Duleek, Donore, Bettystown, Laytown, Mornington, Julianstown, Gormanstown, Ardcath, Stamullen, Skyrne and other surrounding areas.
