Warning to Irish tourists as sharks spotted near popular beaches in Spain and Portugal




Tourists rushed out of the water after a shark was spotted on a popular Portuguese beach, reports Breaking News.

A series of sightings of blue sharks have been recorded off Spanish beaches this year, with a scare at Aguamarina Beach on the Costa Blanca in June and two seen in shallow waters off Porto’s Costa Brava on Sunday.

Locals and vacationers cleaned up the sea at Praia Beach in the Atlantic resort of Espinho on Wednesday as the same species of shark approached the sand.

Children were seen gathering near the shore and shouting “shark” as lifeguards watched the animal, and one brave sun-seeker turned his back on him and started walking slowly towards the beach knee-deep in water.

It Disappeared after swimming back in deep water again.

Following the incident, Portboa Mayor Gail Rodrigues issued a reassuring message saying, “PPortbou beach is completely safe,” reports Breaking News

He added that blue sharks are often found on urban beaches because they are endemic to the area.

Blue sharks rarely bite humans, but have been involved in several bite incidents, four of which are reportedly fatal.

A blue shark was accused of attacking a vacationer in Elche, near Alicante, in July 2016.

The 40-year-old victim was taken to the hospital where a wound was placed on his hand, reports Breaking News
