Weather misery forecast for this week, as heavy and persistent rain and thundery downpours are set to blight the country for the next few days

The summer, if we ever had one, is now well and truly over, as Met Eireann is forecasting a week of weather misery.

The next few days will be blighted by heavy and persistent rain, accompanied by thundery downpours at times. The only good news is that it will remain relatively mild, with temperatures of 21-22C.

The national forecaster says that we may see an improvement in the weather by Sunday.
