We’ll take as many as we can: Martin says more Ukrainians are welcome into Ireland

According to Tánaiste Micheál Martin, the government is not trying to discourage new immigrants from Ukraine by altering the benefits that are provided to them, reports RTE.

Following the Taoiseach’s declaration that steps must be taken to reduce the number of Ukrainian immigrants entering the nation, Mr. Martin made his remarks.

In an interview with RTÉ’s The Week in Politics, Mr. Martin expressed his belief that all new immigrants to Ireland should receive an education and expressed his desire for assurances on this front.

According to the Tánaiste, there were other parties involved than Fianna Fáil and his Coalition allies, reports RTE.

The Cabinet has been debating potential modifications to the State’s housing for Ukrainian immigrants to Ireland in recent weeks.

This included the proposal that new arrivals spend 90 days in a dormitory, after which they would have to find a place to live.

This means that children in these institutions can receive education on-site, but cannot go to school.

Mr Martin said: “The way to do that is a comprehensive package and programme and we need to be upfront about this,” reports RTE.
