The attack occurred around 7:30pm on Friday in the Glenfields Park area of Ballyvolane, where Gardaà and paramedics responded to reports of a dog mauling. It’s understood the dog — believed to be an American Bully-type crossbreed — seriously injured the woman.
According to CorkBeo, the woman, who is in her 30s, was taken to Cork University Hospital for emergency treatment. The dog involved in the incident was later put down by a veterinarian, reports The Mirror.
“Gardaà were alerted to an incident involving a dog that occurred at a residential property in the Ballyvolane area of Cork, on Friday, 18th July 2025,” a spokesperson for An Garda SÃochána said, reports The Mirror.
“A woman, aged in her 30s, was been taken to Cork University Hospital for medical treatment. The dog involved was subsequently euthanised by a vet. Inquiries are ongoing,” reports The Mirror.
One local resident, speaking with the publication, described the animal as a “big, bully type crossbreed” but said it had always been a family pet and never shown signs of aggression before.
Following the Irish Government’s introduction of a new law banning ownership of designated ‘dangerous dogs’ without a specific exemption certificate, many such animals have been surrendered to authorities. The move came in response to several widely reported attacks involving XL Bully breeds, reports The Mirror.
