Woman who had 212 previous convictions gets jailed for slashing victim 40 times with a glass bottle in Dublin city centre

A homeless woman who smashed another homeless woman’s face, head and body with a broken glass bottle has been jailed for two years and three months, reports The Mirror.

Dublin County Court heard that at 3.20am on 20 September 2022, a fight broke out between two homeless women in a Spar store on Dame Street, Dublin.

Julie Ann Stokes, 43, of Butterstown Halting Site, Rock Road, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assaulting another woman and producing a gun at the above location and date.

Stokes has 212 convictions, including burglary, assault, threatening to kill, possessing a knife, drug abuse and disorderly conduct.

Sentencing today, Judge Orla Crowe said it was a “very serious assault” in which the victim was “slashed to the face, head and torso 35 to 40 times”, reports The Mirror.

Judge Crowe said: “The attack happened in a public place at night and was captured on CCTV.” She said the accused went and got “a large broken glass bottle with jagged edges”, reports The Mirror.

The judge said Stokes had a drug problem and the trial report before the court was not “not as favourable” as we would like. The report also highlighted that Stokes is at risk of re-offending, but the probation officer is keen to work with him in the future.

Letters were submitted to the court outlining Stokes’ progress in prison, which Judge Crowe said was “positive” and noted that Stokes was “addressing her issues”, reports The Mirror.

Judge Crowe sentenced Stokes to two years and nine months in prison, with the last six months suspended for rigorous imprisonment. Stokes must remain under the supervision of the probation service and carry out all activities directed by them. The judge put that sentence back until September 2022, when Stokes was taken into custody in the case.

Gardaí Sean Gordon told prosecutor Derek Cooney, BL that gardaí were called after two women had a heated argument at the door of the Spar store. Stokes grabbed the victim by kicking himself in self-defense. The victim then chased Stokes into the store, reports The Mirror.
