Zero tolerance: Calls for extreme measures amid crime worries in Limerick

A Limerick county councillor has called on the government to introduce a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to crime in rural Limerick, while authorities in the city are becoming increasingly worried about the resurgence of gangland attacks in the city.

Councillor Richard O’Donoghue (FF) suggested a that Ireland should adopt a style of policing similar to New York’s, where crime has been significantly reduced since the start of the last decade. He also wants rural garda stations re-opened. In related news, Limerick gardaí reported that there have been two murders in the city since December.

Local councillors and gardaí are worried about a possible return to gang violence. Limerick was blighted by gangland murders and family feuds for many years but has improved drastically in the last decade. Any sign that the city is on the verge of a new wave of crime will be deeply worrying to locals and authorities.
