The Cranberries star has avoided a criminal conviction over the infamous 2014 air rage incident, after a judge ruled that she was ‘mentally ill’ at the time.

The incident took place on November 10, 2014. Ms. O’Riordan had to be forcibly removed from an Aer Lingus flight after she became abusive and disruptive.

A flight attendant suffered an ankle injury while attempting to calm Ms. O’Riordan. The singer then head-butted an officer and spat at others while saying she was an ‘icon’ and the ‘queen of Limerick.’

She pleaded guilty to four offences in total.

Judge Patrick Durcan, on passing sentence, took into account Ms. O’Riordan’s state of mind at the time of the incident. Medical reports say that she was suffering from mania. She has seen been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

The judge said that it would be ‘unfair’ to impose a criminal conviction on Ms. O’Riordan in light of her mental incompetence at the time of the incident.

Instead, he sentenced the singer to pay a fine to a charity.

Ms. O’Riordan said “I don’t really have much to say, just that I’m glad it’s over.”
