Gardai have arrested one person following a fatal assault at Cork’s Mercy Hospital. They were called to the hospital around 5am where they found a man (32) in a shocked state.
They then found a man, believed to be 89, fatally injured following an assault. It is understood that the man in his late 80s was pronounced dead at the scene.
This evening, the elderly gentleman has been named locally as Matthew Healy, an 89-yr-old widower from the Berrings area of north Co Cork.
The man in his 30s is now in custody in connection with this incident after gardai arrested him on what they discovered.
It’s understood the deceased was a patient in the hospital but no further details are released on the detained man.
Gardai believe that the man 32-yr-old man and Mr Healy were involved in a verbal row prior to the assault.
It’s understood other patients alerted staff and they immediately rang Gardai. Staff working on the ward did all they could to save Mr Healy’s life but sadly he was pronounced dead at the scene.
