A swimmer has died after getting into trouble in the sea off the coast of Co Down.
Police confirmed they responded to a report of a man in the water in the South Promenade area of Newcastle just after 10am. M. on Wednesday morning.
Port officials, along with colleagues from other emergency services, went to the scene of the accident, where the man’s body was recovered from the water.
Unfortunately, despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is not currently considered suspicious.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service sent two emergency teams, two emergency paramedics and the Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.
The Air Ambulance charity team also attended the incident, as did the Newcastle branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
