The Dutch Freedom Party (PVV) is set to win around 35 of the 150 seats available making it the largest party in the Netherland’s parliament.
The shock result means outspoken nationalist and Eurosceptic Geert Wilders will now be impossible to ignore in Dutch politics.
Condemned as far right, racist and Islamphobic, Wilders was once even banned from the UK.
He has called on The Netherlands to leave the EU and mass deport migrants, particularly Muslims, in an effort to reverse what he sees an “Islamisation” of his country and Europe.
Wilders will have an uphill battle to cobble together a coalition.
The firebrand patriot has proposed to ban mosques and the Quran, and his hardline euroskeptic views have included calls for a so-called “Nexit” referendum on leaving the EU.
This makes him out of bounds for most establishment parties in the country.
“This exit poll is historic; it is the biggest shift we have ever seen in the Netherlands,” political scientist Tom van der Meer told national broadcaster NOS.
