Singer Tina Turner, one of the greatest singers of all time, has died aged 83.
He died peacefully at his home in Küsnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long illness, his representative said.
Turner began his career in the 1950s, in the early years of rock ‘n’ roll, and became an MTV phenomenon.
With his penchant for musical experimentation and outspoken ballads, Turner was perfectly suited to the pop landscape of the 1980s, in which music fans valued electronically generated sounds and despised hippie-era idealism.
Turner won six of his eight Grammy Awards in the 1980s. During that decade, he listed a dozen top 40 songs, including “Typical Male”, “The Best”, “Private Dancer” and “Better Be Good to Me”.
Their 1988 show in Rio de Janeiro drew 180,000 people, still one of the largest concert audiences for any artist.
