A US warplane acting on the orders of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has shot down an unidentified object over Canada, the second such downing in North American skies since the dramatic downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon A week ago.
The operation was the latest in a series of aerial incidents in North America that began late last month when a suspected Chinese spy balloon flew across Canada and the continental United States, deepening a rupture diplomatic with Beijing.
“Canadian and US aircraft were scrambled, and a US F-22 successfully fired at the object,” Mr Trudeau tweeted.
Trudeau said that Canadian forces in the Yukon “will now recover and analyse the wreckage of the object.”
He said he spoke to US President Joe Biden about the latest raid, while Canada’s Defence Secretary also said he spoke to US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin.
The two “reaffirmed that we’ll always defend our sovereignty together,” tweeted Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand.
