A woman and her young child were airlifted to Cork University Hospital (CUH) after being rescued from the sea near Ballycton in east Cork, reports RTE.
The incident happened at 12:10pm on Ballycronin Beach, between Ballycton and Guilin, when a young mother and her 10-yr-old son were in the water.
Rescue 117 Helicopter, Ballykton Lifeboat, Crosshaven Lifeboat, Guilin Coast Guard and Ballykton Coast Guard were called to the scene, reports RTE.
It is understood that the child was lifted from the rocks and brought to the beach by an Irish Coast Guard helicopter.
The mother was rescued from the sea by the Crosshaven lifeboat and taken to Ballykton pier where she was transported by helicopter to CUH but sadly it has been confirmed this evening that she has passed away.
