The health ministry in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip has said the death toll from Israeli bombing of the Palestinian territory has surpassed 10,000, nearly a month after the war began, reports RTE.

Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf Al Kidreh announced the death toll at 10,022 at a news conference in Gaza.

A Reuters reporter in Gaza described the overnight bombardment from the air, land and sea as the most intense since Israel launched an offensive a month ago in response to a surprise attack by Hamas in southern Israel.

The war began on October 7, when Hamas killed 1,400 people and took 240 hostages in Israel, reports RTE.

By refusing to agree to a cease-fire until the hostages are released, Israel has faced continued pressure to avoid civilian casualties in attacks on Gaza aimed at reducing the risk of escalating US diplomatic pressure on the region.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met with Turkey’s foreign minister in Ankara, hours after hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters tried to attack an airbase where US troops are stationed in southern Turkey.

Yesterday, Blinken made an unannounced visit to the West Bank to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who has joined international calls for an immediate ceasefire.

Israel says 31 soldiers have been killed since an expanded ground operation in Gaza began on Oct. 27, battling thousands of Hamas fighters who believe they can halt Israeli advances in a maze of tunnels under the enclave, reports RTE.

According to a post by the King of Jordan on X and state media reports, the Jordanian Air Force sent emergency medical aid to a Jordanian field hospital in Gaza.

US Central Command, which covers the Middle East, said in October that an Ohio-class nuclear missile submarine had arrived in the region, an unusual announcement of a nuclear submarine’s location that some analysts saw as a message to Iran.

“All night I and the other men were trying to pick the dead from the rubble. We got children, dismembered, torn-apart flesh,” said Saeed al-Nejma, 53, reports RTE.
