About 1,200 children remain without school bus transport for more than six weeks into the new school term, reports RTE.

Among them, more than 100 children have special educational needs.

This is the first year that the current school bus system has faced such a large and long-term shortage.

Acknowledging the issue, Education Minister Norma Foley said she recognized these issues and challenges for parents and families, reports RTE.

Ms Foley said there were “limited outstanding issues” that her department was continuing to work with Bus Ireland on, and said driver and bus shortages were problems that existed across the transport sector.

Budget 2024 introduces a new payment of €2,000 for all newly qualified teachers with a Master’s degree in education, reports RTE.

Schools have been strongly criticised for not receiving ICT grants this year.

The minister announced at the annual conference of the National Association of Principals and Vice-Principals that ICT scholarships for the current academic year will be awarded to schools in 2024.
