A teenage boy accused of hijacking and assaulting an electric scooter rider at St Stephen’s Green has been remanded in custody while a decision is made on where his trial will take place.
The boy, now 15, who cannot be identified due to his age, appeared before the Dublin Children’s Court facing charges including vehicle theft, unlawful seizure of a KuKirin G2 electric scooter, and assault causing harm on 18 June 2025, reports RTE.
Fran Kennedy gave evidence of the boy’s arrest, charge and caution, and told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case be tried on indictment in the Circuit Court.
This would allow for greater sentencing powers, reports RTE.
However, under Section 75 of the Children Act, the defence can apply to have the case heard in the Children’s Court instead.
The law allows a judge to consider factors such as the accused’s age, maturity, and other relevant circumstances when deciding on jurisdiction, reports RTE.
Judge Paul Kelly noted that no bail application was made and remanded the boy, who remains in custody, to appear again in April.
A preliminary hearing will then determine the appropriate trial venue, and the boy has not yet entered a plea, reports RTE.
