A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the manslaughter of Urantsetseg Tserendorj, a mother-of-two who was attacked on her way home from work in Dublin earlier this year. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had denied murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The Central Criminal Court heard that Tserendorj’s husband and children had suffered an “irreparable loss”.

The mandatory sentence for murder for an adult is life imprisonment, but since the accused was a minor at the time of the offence, he was sentenced to 10 years in detention. The sentencing judge said that he had taken into account the boy’s age and his guilty plea when deciding on his sentence.

The trial heard that male DNA profiles extracted from under Tserendorj’s fingernails matched samples generated from the accused. The accused had denied murder but had pleaded guilty to manslaughter on 29 January 2021.

The sentencing judge said that he hoped that Tserendorj’s family could find some solace in knowing that justice had been done. He also noted that while there was no evidence of premeditation, there was evidence of “a degree of planning” on the part of the accused.
