A 25-yr-old man appeared before Dublin District Court after leaving an apartment complex with a tiny child “under his arm” that he did not know, reports RTE.
The man, who is not allowed to be identified by the court, was charged with trying to kidnap or detain a minor under the age of sixteen after the incident on Saturday. He was detained yesterday.
According to the district court, the man left the flat he was staying in to attend a party in a north side apartment block.
CCTV footage showed him engaging with two young children, ages five and ten, reports RTE.
He didn’t know the kids, the court was told.
Police At one time, the man was spotted exiting the premises and walking away with the five-year-old under his arm, Laura McDermott testified in court.
After the elder child trailed behind him, the man was spotted coming back with the two kids.
When the man was apprehended, he reportedly told the court, “I wasn’t taking a child anywhere.” I’m not that kind of person. With a child, I had no intention of doing anything. I did not have any ill or undesirable intentions with the child,” reports RTE.
Michael Kelleher, the man’s attorney, said the court that the man was inebriated when he entered the building during a party.
Mr. Kelleher stated that at this time, he was unable to request bail.
Judge Gerard Jones remanded the accused in jail until Wednesday at Cloverhill District Court, stating that it was a very serious case.
He restricted reporting of the accused’s identify when Garda McDermott submitted an application, citing “the current climate in the country” as justification, reports RTE.
