3-yr-old toddler has tragically died in Greece after drowning in swimming pool

A young boy has tragically died after drowning in a swimming pool while on holiday with his family in Greece. The three-year-old child was found unresponsive in a pool in the village of Tsilivi, located on the island of Zakynthos, on Sunday afternoon, reports The Mirror.

Emergency services responded swiftly and transported the boy to hospital, where he was sadly declared dead.

According to local media, early reports suggest the child had been vacationing on Zakynthos with a family who hold UK passports. A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed to Mirror UK that a British child had died while in Greece, reports The Mirror.

The government spokesperson stated they are working with local officials. They said: “We are providing consular support to the family of a British child who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Greek state broadcaster ERT reported that the child had been staying with his mother, two aunts, and grandparents at the time of the incident. The family had rented a villa when the accident occurred, reports The Mirror.

Reports say the group was staying at a four-bedroom villa in Tsilivi, on the northeastern side of Zante, around two miles west of Zakynthos town. The rental, which costs £2,000 (€2,322) per week, is described online as a “true gem” offering complete privacy.

A police investigation into the circumstances of the child’s death was launched on Sunday evening and is being led by an investigating court. The inquiry is still ongoing, reports The Mirror.
