A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Britain after two students and a school janitor were killed in a knife and van attack in Nottingham.

Former Nottingham University student Waldo Calocane, who identified himself as Adam Mendes, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court this morning, reports RTE.

He is accused of killing freshmen Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Weber and school janitor Ian Coates early Tuesday morning.

Mr Calocane is also accused of attempting to kill three pedestrians, Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski and Sharon Miller, after using Mr Coates’ van to pick up people on Milton Street and Upper Parliament Street, reports RTE.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) said the driver of a marked police car saw the vehicle “less than a minute” before it collided with pedestrians on South Sherwood Street.

Mr Weber’s family described their “complete devastation” at the “senseless murder of our son”, saying he was a “beautiful, brilliant, bright young man, with everything in life to look forward to”, reports RTE.

Mr Coates’ two sons said his death had “rocked everyone’s world”, adding: “Nobody deserves this but he definitely didn’t,” reports RTE.
