Murnaghan, born on 26 December 1957 in Barnstaple, Devon, enjoyed a distinguished career spanning more than four decades across major UK networks. He anchored flagship programmes for ITV and the BBC, including News at Ten, before joining Sky News in 2007, where he became one of its lead anchors for 16 years until his departure in 2023. He also hosted the popular BBC quiz show Eggheads for 11 years.

In June 2025, Murnaghan bravely shared his stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis publicly, urging men over 50 to seek early screening. Despite responding positively to treatment initially and participating in fundraising efforts, including charity bike rides, the disease progressed. His death was announced today.

Colleagues and viewers remembered Murnaghan for his calm authority, particularly when he broke major stories such as the deaths of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II. He leaves behind his wife and children.

Sky News described him as “a consummate professional and much-loved colleague.” His legacy as a trusted voice in British journalism endures.
