A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. A judge described this as an extremely violent and brutal attack on a woman in County Donegal four years ago.

Richard Burke, of Killygordon, was found not guilty of murder earlier this year but was found guilty of the manslaughter of Jasmine McMonagle on charges of diminished responsibility, reports RTE.

Ms McMonagle, a 28-year-old woman with two children, was strangled with a rope and severely beaten at her home in the early hours of January 4, 2019.

RTE reports that Gardaí were forced to break into the home after a confrontation with Burke. The decision to enter the house was made when a child was seen at the window.

Ms McMonagle was found in a pool of blood in the kitchen of her home. Several weapons, including a meat grinder, were found at the scene.

Burke later told the gardaí that when she called the gardaí he went ballistic claiming he had a bad temper, reports RTE.

Burke has been thrown into custody for 14 years.
