4-yr-old girl who sued HSE over delay in meningitis diagnosis receives €1.7 million compensation

In her High Court lawsuit against the HSE, a four-year-old girl who sued over what she claimed was an unwarranted delay in diagnosing her meningitis as a new born infant received an interim settlement of €1.7 million, reports Breaking News.

Rehmah Shafiq was allegedly not screened or given antibiotics at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, County Galway, as soon as she was born.

Rehmah Shafiq also claimed against the HSE that the hospital failed to recognise sepsis symptoms in the first hour of a patient’s existence.

Rehmah was born on July 8, 2019, but her diagnosis and treatment did not begin with antibiotics for another two days, reports Breaking News.

The baby should have received antibiotics sooner, according to her attorney Bruce Antoniotti SC, who was instructed by Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors. If she had, the infant would not have contracted meningitis.

He claimed that the infant had a brain clot as a result of the meningitis, and that this caused her to have cerebral damage, reports Breaking News.

According to Mr. Antoniotti, antibiotics were started two days after the baby was born.

“We say it should have been done sooner and if it did, she would not have suffered from the meningitis,” he added, reports Breaking News.
