The country will take 600 rescued migrants from Syria and Eritrea over the next two years, as part of international efforts to ease the crisis in the Mediterranean sea.

The Government signed off on the deal this week, before a meeting of European Justice Ministers takes place on Monday.

The Irish Navy has dispatched two vessels to the area to participate in rescue efforts. So far, 37,000 people have been rescued from Mediterranean waters this year.
