82 per cent of Irish people fear a recession in the next year, new poll shows

A total of 82 per cent of people fear a recession within the next year, with 56 per cent believing it could be as severe as or worse than the 2008 financial crash.

A Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll indicates that the public is preparing for a global downturn the war in Iran, reports Breaking News.

Many respondents said they are concerned about the likelihood of an economic slowdown over the next 12 months.

On Saturday, Sinn Féin called for the Dáil to be recalled during its Easter recess, reports Breaking News.

Party leader Mary Lou McDonald accused the Government of failing to support households struggling with rising energy costs.

Speaking at the party’s Easter commemoration in Kildare Town, she said families urgently need assistance, reports Breaking News.

“The price of home heating oil has now doubled, and it’s just an extraordinary burden on 750,000 households, that’s three-quarters of a million households, and the government’s half measures have not worked. We need further intervention, so today Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, our Chief Whip, has written to the Ceann Comhairle asking for a recall of the Dáil,”, reports Breaking News.

Ms McDonald’s remarks follow warnings from the Irish Road Haulage Association, which has described rising fuel costs as a “national emergency” and called for further Government action.

Speaking about the issue, Ger Hyland, IRHA president, said: “While existing supports were welcome, the continued increases in fuel prices have effectively eroded the benefit of those initial supports. The situation facing hauliers has intensified in recent days, with operators now under renewed financial pressure as diesel prices show no signs of stabilisation. This is a national emergency,” reports Breaking News.
