According to investigators, the vehicle that struck pedestrians may have followed an ambulance responding to a cardiac emergency, after a road closure was temporarily lifted, reports Breaking News.
A spokesperson for the police explained that there had been a partial road closure on Dale Street – which connects to Water Street – between North John Street and Exchange Street.
To prevent traffic from entering Water Street, vehicles were redirected down Exchange Street, and a flatbed truck along with traffic cones had been set up to act as a barrier, the spokesperson said, reports Breaking News.
Water Street connects to The Strand, where massive crowds had gathered to watch Liverpool’s team bus during celebrations of their 20th Premier League title.
Authorities have not yet disclosed what substance the suspect is believed to have consumed, stating: “We wouldn’t go into this detail at this stage of the investigation,” reports Breaking News.
A fundraising effort created for those affected has brought in over £30,000 so far, including a £10,000 contribution from the Jamie Carragher 23 Foundation, a charity run by the former Liverpool player.
The Liverpool Spirit Appeal was launched by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, in collaboration with Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services (LCVS). The money raised will go to support individuals with physical or psychological injuries from the incident, as well as community groups, reports Breaking News.
