Ireland could soon have another city in the coming months as Tralee Co Kerry is seeking to have the coveted status.
The news comes after local Fianna Fáil councillor Thomas McEllistrim said giving his hometown the status is one of his top priorities.
Mr McEllistrim reportedly claims that Tralee should be given city status due to the fact that Kilkenny has a similar population and is already a designated city. The new proposal could soon become a reality given the fact that many locals are in favour of the change.
The new motion for city status will be put before Tralee’s Municipal District next Monday.
However the town will need to apply parliamentary legislation in order to become an internationally recognised city.
