A cruise ship passenger gets rescued after 15 hours in the sea

A passenger who went missing from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico has been rescued after more than 15 hours at sea, the US Coast Guard says.

The 28-yr-old man had been at a bar on the Carnival Valor ship Wednesday night with his sister, but he did not return after going to the bathroom.

Several rescue teams searched the area and the man was finally sighted Thursday night, about 20 miles (30 km) off the Louisiana coast.

He is said to be in stable condition.

US Coast Guard Lt. Seth Gross said the man may have been in the water for more than 15 hours, “absolute longest that I’ve heard about – and just one of those Thanksgiving miracles”, reports BBC

Gross told CNN that the case was unlike anything he had seen in his 17-year career and that the happy outcome “shows the will to live is something that you need to account for in every search-and-rescue case”, reports BBC.

It is unclear how the man jumped into the water from the boat headed for Cotumel in Mexico.

In 2018, a 46-year-old British woman was rescued 10 hours after her cruise ship fell into the Adriatic Sea.

At the time, she was reported that she told a rescuer who helped her that she was able to do yoga and sing to stop feeling cold at night.
