An SUV climbed a curb and ploughed over a marathon runner, killing her in a horrifying collision, reports The Mirror.

On Sunday morning, Anila Mucaj, 48, was killed when an SUV driver climbed a curb and drove her and her two jogging friends over on the Canal Road in Tralee, County Kerry.

Participating in the local “Born to run Tralee” club, Ms. Mucaj was instantaneously killed when the automobile struck her and then crashed against a barrier 200 meters down the road. Although they were taken to the hospital, Ms. Mucaj’s running teammates did not sustain any life-threatening injuries, reports The Mirror.

The elderly driver was taken to the hospital in the interim, and it is believed that gardai were investigating whether he had a medical episode at the time of the horrifying collision. It is believed that he also sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

The horrifying collision happened on a little road that connected Tralee to the bridge at Blennerville. Runners, cyclists, and walkers all use the nearby canal walk where the SUV is parked, reports The Mirror.

Local leaders have responded with dismay at the occurrence. “First of all, on a human level, we’re just so disappointed to have a tragedy like this occur again,” local TD Michael Healy Rae told us. Despite mishaps, we sincerely apologise. It goes without saying that the terrible death toll has shattered our community.

Cllr Sam Locke added: “The driver was in his 80s and he struck three of the runners who are normally out that time every Sunday. It’s a tragic course of events and a terrible shock to the running community. She was a local lady and there’s just a general feeling of dismay,” reports The Mirror.

“This is a devastating loss, and my heart goes out to the family and friends of the woman who has sadly passed away,” Tralee Mayor Cllr. Mikey Sheahy informed us in the interim. This incident has shocked and devastated the whole community.

“I also want to extend my thoughts to the two injured runners and wish them a full recovery. Tralee is a close-knit community, and I know people will rally around those affected in the days ahead,” reports The Mirror.

Gardaí are requesting anybody who saw this collision. Those who have dash-cam records or other camera video from the area at the time are especially encouraged to come forward.

Contact the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, Tralee Garda Station at 066 7102300, or any Garda Station if you have any information, reports The Mirror.
