A hospital in County Kerry is to be used to house Ukrainians

The iconic St Finan’s Hospital in Killarney has been offered to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage as a housing and housing option for Ukrainian refugees.

The property, which has been vacant for nearly a decade, sits on about 30 acres of land.

The former psychiatric hospital opened as Killarney Asylum in 1852 and treated over 1,000 patients at its peak in the 1950s and 1960s.

HSE put it up for sale on the open market last year after having been offered it to various authorities including the local council.

Once a major employer in Killarney, calls for the Grade II listed building to be converted into a hotel and catering school, third level university or care home have fallen on deaf ears over the years.

The sizeable building and grounds overlook the Killarney Lakes and is adjacent to schools and other facilities.
