‘A lot of pressure’ over accommodation for asylum seekers, says Martin

According to Tánaiste Micheál Martin, there is “no doubt” that applicants for international protection would require public and private housing in the future, reports RTE.

His remarks coincide with the upcoming document that will be presented to Cabinet in the upcoming weeks on the provision of more state-owned housing.

He noted that Roderic O’Gorman, the minister for integration, is making plans about this and that greater capacity is required given the volume of people who have come and still come, reports RTE.

According to Mr. Martin, 13,000 asylum requests were made in Ireland in 2018, a roughly five-fold rise from the previous year.

That, he maintained, had nothing to do with how many Ukrainians were coming here to escape conflict.

“Fundamentally we are under a lot of pressure,” he said, reports RTE.
