A non-binary Applegreen worker was asked if they were going to ‘get a d*ck’, hearing gets told

A non-binary worker said a co-worker asked if they would “get a d*ck” before they were due for surgery.

Mar Butler also said colleagues and executives knew someone had nicknamed them “margarine” when they worked at the Applegreen gas station, reports Sunday World.

They are filing a lawsuit with the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) against their employer, Petrogas Group, claiming they have been discriminated against on the basis of gender.

Their attorney Barry Krushell said the plaintiff began working for Applegreen in April 2019 and felt compelled to step down in May 2021 to protect their physical and mental health.

At yesterday’s hearing, the plaintiff said they made several requests for colleagues to use the pronouns “they” and “them,” but felt “sh*t” when they didn’t, reports Sunday World.

The worker, who was a supervisor, said they spoke to the operations manager about it. They claimed the manager “kind of laughed it off” and said some people are immature.

MX Butler said colleagues and managers would know people were using the alias for them.

MX Butler said someone had called them “margarine.” They said it happened in an open plan kitchen and there must have been shouting throughout the kitchen.

The plaintiff said they were so shocked by the situation that they started crying in front of customers in the Applegreen lobby.

MX Butler said they told colleagues they found it disgusting that they essentially begged them to use their pronouns and they still refused to. They said instead of apologizing, they just made excuses.

MX Butler said they came in to “smoke,” and a supervisor came out and said they didn’t understand why it was such a big deal to them.

MX Butler said that even when educational materials are offered, colleagues and management refuse to educate themselves. They said working in a place like this was excruciating and they felt “horrific”, reports Sunday World.
