A real treat for stargazes later this week as annual perseid meteor shower is set to illuminate Irish skies

Attention stargazers Irish skies are set to be illuminated later this week as a spectacular meteor shower is expected to grace the night’s sky.

The phenomenal annual Perseid meteor shower which occurs between July and August is set to peak later this week when the shooting stars will shine at their brightest above skies all around the world.

Astronomers say the phenomenon which has been described as spectacular sight occurs when the Earth ploughs through debris trailing behind the Swift-Tuttle comet, which then creates a spectacular meteor shower that displays about 80 shooting stars every hour.

The shooting stars which are about the size of a grain sand are thought to travel at about 37 miles a second during the meteor shower as they create a spectacular cosmic fireworks display that is clearly visible across the globe.

It is expected the perseid shower will peak this coming Saturday August 12th and it will remain visible (weather permitting) until Monday.
