More than 128,000 automobiles were deemed “fail dangerous” when they were submitted for an NCT last year, bringing the total number of dangerously faulty vehicles on Irish roads to a record high, reports Breaking News.
According to data released by the National Car Testing Service, 128,548 vehicles were deemed dangerously unroadworthy following inspections at NCT test facilities in 2024.
The percentage of automobiles with serious defects found last year is 7.42% of all vehicles inspected by the NCTS in 2024, reports Breaking News.
The percentage of “fail dangerous” vehicles has increased yearly from a low of 4.9% in 2020 to the greatest level of unroadworthy autos found in previous years.
According to the most recent data, 3,965 unroadworthy automobiles were once more deemed “fail dangerous” upon being submitted for retesting in 2024.
When a car is deemed to have a harmful flaw that poses an immediate or direct risk to road safety, it is classified as a “dangerous fail” and should never be driven on a public road, reports Breaking News.
An NCTS vehicle inspector will attach a label that reads “Failed Dangerous” to the car and explain to the driver why and how their vehicle is unsafe and unfit for use on the road.
According to Applus+, a Spanish corporation that runs the NCT at 50 test locations around the Republic on behalf of the Road Safety Authority, reports Breaking News.
According to the corporation, consumers are also given a notice that the NCTS would notify An Garda Síochána that a dangerous, faulty vehicle was just driven out of the facility if they drive the car off the property.
According to Sinéad McKeon, communications manager for Applus+, drivers with “fail dangerous” vehicles have a varied response; some choose to ignore the warnings and leave the test facility in their vehicle, reports Breaking News.
According to Ms. McKeon, the large number of “fail dangerous” cars was most likely caused by people who did not regularly service their automobiles.
“People don’t check on their car in advance of going in for a test and they are using the NCT as a diagnostic tool instead of getting their vehicle services first,” she added, reports Breaking News.
