Authorities in Italy have called a year long state of emergency following the collapsing of Molandi Bridge in Geona.

The declaration comes after authorities confirmed that at least 39 people have been killed in the devastating incident which occurred on Tuesday.

It is understood the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte declared the emergency as rescue workers continue to search the site for survivors and the deceased.

According to reports in Italy a major investigation is underway as Italian authorities suspect the bridge collapsed due to poor design or bad maintenance.

Meanwhile some 630 residents living near the bridge have been evacuated as a precautionary measure with some officials believing the remaining structure could collapse at any time.
