It’s one of the most shameful statistics in the Western World – Ireland has officially more than 10,000 homeless Irish people.
But one homeless campaigner isn’t buying it.
Fr. Peter McVerry has said that official Government figures are ‘nonsense’, and that it’s likely that upwards of 15,000 people will be without a home in Ireland this Christmas.
The official Government number puts the homeless at just over 10,000, but according to Fr. McVerry, this number is ‘irrelevant.’
Homelessness has been rising steadily under the watch of successive Housing Ministers, and the crisis shows no signs of abating any time soon due to Government inaction.
Fr. McVerry has been a tireless campaigner for the homeless – even allowing one family to sleep in his car for a night – depicting the true extent of the problem.
