Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly has pledged more emergency accommodation for homeless people in Dublin.

He said:“In the city of Dublin by Christmas there should be no reason for anybody to sleep rough. If they want a bed, if they want accommodation, it will be there for them if they so choose.”

Yesterday in Dublin an emergency summit on the crisis was held at the Department of the Environment, following the death of Jonathan Corrie – a homeless man who died just metres from the Dáil earlier this week.

Minister Kelly went on to say: “The emergency accommodation beds that we’ve increased to 200, will be made available very shortly within days and weeks.

So I’m happy that has come as a result of everything that’s done. I want to thank the people who have offered that, because everyone’s pulling together.”
