Alert: Met Eireann issue weather warning with forecast of major cold snap

Snow could fall in parts of Ireland within days of the bitter cold.

Met Irons has issued a 16-hour Ice Weather Warning with effect from 6pm on Monday.

The nationwide Yellow Alert is in place through Tuesday and 10 a.m. and reads, “Hazardous conditions due to freezing temperatures including icy stretches on roads and paths,” reports The Mirror.

Next week, the mercury is expected to drop below the freezing point as cold Arctic air bears down on the south.

A meteorologist said: “It will be very cold until at least Thursday with frost, ice and some possible wintry falls,” reports The Mirror.

The National Meteorologist has not ruled out the possibility of a weather warning being issued, saying: “Colder than average conditions could lead to some wintry hazards, especially frosty nights,” reports The Mirror.

The first snow could fall on Monday night, Met Irons said: “Wintry showers will move into north facing coasts later in the night, in a mostly light northerly airflow,” reports The Mirror.

On Tuesday it says: “Some well scattered sleet or snow showers will stream into the north and northwest but with a lot of dry weather elsewhere,” reports The Mirror.

However, independent Irish forecaster Alan O’Reilly warned of extreme wind chill over upcoming days.
