As part of a government plan being examined at Cabinet on Tuesday, Algeria and Botswana would be added to Ireland’s list of “safe countries” of origin, reports Breaking News.

In order to expedite the processing of more applications for international protection, the change is being studied.

Within ten weeks of landing in Ireland, applicants for international protection from Algeria and Botswana will have their applications decided.

The “safe countries” list is a component of the procedure used to evaluate asylum claims, reports Breaking News.

Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Georgia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Serbia, and South Africa are among the nations now on the list of safe havens.

In November 2022, Minister of Justice Helen McEntee announced the introduction of a new, expedited application process for candidates from “safe countries.”

The International Protection Office nevertheless gives each application from a citizen of a safe nation careful consideration based solely on its merits, reports Breaking News.
