All eyes on how Gardai Chief Drew Harris handles Varadkar investigation as Foster demands resignation of Chief Constable for not prosecuting attendees at Sinn Fein Funeral.

Arlene Foster, leader of the DUP in Northern Ireland and First Minister of the Northern Ireland Assembly has called for PSNI Chief Constable Simon Byrne to resign, saying his position is “untenable” following a decision not to prosecute 24 members of Sinn Fein for attendance at Bobby Storey’s funeral reports the Belfast Telegraph.

Foster said prior engagement between police officers and funeral organisers, thought to be senior Sinn Fein members, was “inexplicable”.

The Public Prosecution Service of Northern Ireland said those present had a “reasonable excuse” defence due to the confusing regulations and extensive prior engagement with the PSNI.

South of the border, former PSNI Chief Constable and now Gardai Commissioner Drew Harris and his force are currently carrying out a criminal investigation into alleged leaking of documents by the Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
