Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has told Europeans to expect a harsh winter as Russia’s attack on his country prompts Moscow to cut oil and gas exports.
Zelensky spoke last night after Moscow closed a major pipeline supplying Russian gas to the mainland.
“Russia is preparing a decisive energy blow on all Europeans for this winter,” he said in his daily video address.
Moscow cited Western sanctions imposed over its invasion of Ukraine and technical problems with power outages. European countries that backed the Kyiv government with diplomatic and military support accused Russia of weaponizing energy supplies.
Some analysts say that as winter approaches, shortages and rising costs of living are likely to weaken Western support for Kyiv as governments try to deal with a disgruntled population.
