Nearly €23,000 has been raised for a man who came to the aid of a north Belfast man during a knife attack on Monday night.
The GoFundMe campaign was launched to buy a pint for Maitiu Mág Tighearnán, identified as the man who confronted the attacker by striking him with a hurling stick a number of times, reports Breaking News.
The fundraiser, set up by Belfast man Niall Donnan, states: “Maitiu Mág Tighearnán has revealed himself as the man who confronted the attacker in Belfast last night. Faced with unimaginable violence, he chose courage over fear and grabbed a hurley stick to defend his fellow Irish man.
“I have set up this GoFundMe so the people of our land can show our support to Matt for his incredible bravery and courage. 100% of donations will be sent to Matt directly. Let’s buy him a pint!” reports Breaking News.
The victim of the attack has since been named as Stephen Ogilvie, who remains critically ill in hospital following the stabbing on Kinnaird Avenue on Monday 9 June, with a Sudanese man in his 30s arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
North Belfast MP John Finucane said those who intervened may have saved the victim’s life, adding: “They showed extraordinary courage and bravery to step in, to put themselves in danger to save, I think possibly, a man’s life because of their selfless acts, and I want, on behalf of everybody I’m sure, to thank them for that,” reports Breaking News.
