Ambitious but realistic: Government introduces new Climate Action plan that will see more electric cars and homeowners generating their own electricity

The Government have outlined their plans to cut Ireland’s carbon emissions in the near future.

In its Climate Action plan which was introduced by the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Richard Bruton, the Government say that they plan to have zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Although the plan which will see a whole host of changes has been described as ambitious, the Government say it is achievable provided the right infrastructure is properly put in place.

Amongst the plans outlined this afternoon, the Minister for the Environment said that the state will look to provide 950,000 electric vehicles from now until 2030, whilst a whole sale ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars will arrive in 2030.

The plan will also see 400,000 heat pumps being installed in homes across the country, whilst a microgeneration scheme will be put in place that will see homeowners generate their own electricity.

Announcing the plan Bruon said the scheme will see homes across the country sell unused electricity back to the National Grid.

The ambitious plan is also expected to have a Retrofit Plan that will cut the costs of installing more eco friendly heating and electricity systems to 500,000 homes across the country.

The plan which aims to cut Ireland’s emissions by 70% by 2030 will include a scheme to eliminate non-recyclable plastics, with the emphasis being on the banning of single use plastics.

It is believed that a number of measures will be introduced to replace all hard to recycle plastics, whilst the continued use of such plastics will see companies and businesses being hit with hefty fees.

Although the plan has some criticisms, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has claimed that the change will create further jobs and businesses in the future.
