A white American academic has created a storm of controversy after revealing she has spent years pretending to be black, the Guardian reports.
Jessica Krug, professor of African American history at George Washington University, revealed her ‘toxic soil of lies’ in a Medium article where she conceded she has been adopting fake black personas for years despite being a white Jewish woman.
In her book ‘Fugitive Modernities’, on the Atlantic slave trade, she dedicated her acknowledgements to ‘my ancestors’ and to her supposed slave descended family ‘in my barrio, in Angola, or in Brazil’.
In activist circles Krug presented herself as Jessica Bombalera, a black woman from East Harlem in NYC despite actually hailing from suburban Kansas City in the midwest. Those who knew the fraudster as Bombalera have expressed their shock and anger on social media.
The case is reminiscent of Rachel Dolezal, a white civil rights activist who also falsely claimed to be black until she was outed by her own parents in 2015.
